Poi

Poi is the art of spinning 2 different weights (newspaper balls, kevlar wicks, glowsticks, etc...At the end of strings, yarn, shoe lases, chains, etc...

There are many different moves you can learn, the most basic is forward or backward swing.

You begin by hanging your poi at your side, swinging them evenly, forward or backwards. Here are some of the basic moves that you can do, I'll explain them later: Butterfly (in front) Behind the back butterfly, Single weave, Double weave, Reverse single/double weave, Windmill, Chasing the sun, hiding the moon, Threading the needle, Shake your bushy tail, Mexican wave, high/lowCorksrew, Most of these moves will allow you to feel comfotable enough using your poi, that you can learn and invent your own moves. Or you could begin using the moves you do know and intergrate wraps (this is the action where you wrap or slap your poi against yourself to change direction-it looks really cool).

Where we all began

Eva: She began spinning poi May of 2000 at an Elf Lore Family (lothlorien Nature Sanctuary) Event, she began practcing with dead glowsticks, a painful way to learn moves. Then She moved onto to newspaper made poi balls, trying to master as much as she could. Finally in September of 2001 she lit her wicks and was swinging flame. People had told her it was scary; the swishing sound around your body. She didn't want to stop, only keep the fire lit. People have told her that she is the fastest spinner they've ever seen, she's the wild one, with a little twinge of her belly dancing nature, a Leo by nature, she loves to be the center of attention and she loves FIRE.

Katie: Katie also began in May of 2000. Eva and her learned together. It was fun and Katie was good at it, she lit up at the end of August 2001. People have called her the graceful one. A true belly dancer by nature, she mixes dance and spinning creating a wonderful show. Katie and Eva have been regularly teaching people for 2 1/2 years now.

                               THE LILS

Lillith:  Lillith began a year or two after Katie and Eva and it seemed like you couldn't get those poi out of her hands, she has a very original technique and a creative outlook on the art, she is always making up her own moves and sharing them with the rest of us, she has a sweet heart and it shows through when you see the love she has for spinning. She hasn't yet lit up, but when she does in May og 2004 she will be incredible. She is always practicing and thats what makes an incredible performer.

Lily: Lily began a few months after Katie and Eva, but she didn't really take to it as fast, but when she did she began learning moves quickly, the wonderful thing about the art of poi is that everyone has their own style and their own goal to meet, and Lily meets them all, she has fun with the art which makes her a poi artist. She will light up in May of 2004 with Lillith and together the "Lils" will be astounding.

Friends and Fellow Performers

We want to recognize all of the amazing people who spin in any style and help teach eachother the art.

Emily who first brought poi to Lothlorien nature sanctuary, spinning glowsticks over her head in the community building while we all watched and danced. Emily is the one who Taught Katie and Eva their first moves. She handed over her first pair of spinning shoe lases and Katie and Eva shared them. Emily does poi, fire blowing and incredible wraps with poi.

Molly who is the most incredible teahcer, she's a fast learner, she started after Katie, Eva and Lily, but introduced a large amount of the moves we know and love today. She is an utterly fantastic teacher and great friend to spin with. Molly does poi, baton, double baton, fire fingers and fire fans.

Chandra we don't get to see anymore, she's an awesome spinner, a fun person to hang out with and learn with.
